Piękne wokalne harmonie, doskonale znane już z poprzedniego krążka Elephant Tree, nadają muzyce lekkości i efemerycznej atmosfery, skutecznie zduszonej gęstym brzmieniem. Singlowy numer Sails przedstawia całą paletę barw, jaką zespół ma do zaoferowania. Znakomity groove w Exit The Souls fajnie zbalansowany jest klawiszowymi podkładami, a jakby było Wam mało, to możecie też sięgnąć po akustyczną balladę The Fall Chorus, którą można by dopisać do kanonu stylu americana.

English version:

With hundreds and thousands of bands who are playing stoner and doom metal, it’s really hard to find novelty. Most of the musicians are copying the same ideas and 'Iommi style’ of riffs from the Sabbath primetime. It’s not an objection, rather observation of stoner metal scene. But from the other side, like in other styles and genres, you can find the bands, who give to their listeners something more than just a music… And that’s what London based band Elephant Tree does.

On their third LP Habits britons prove, that there is no other and better psychedelic stoner band like Elephant Tree. Beautiful vocal harmonies, well known from previous release as well (s/t), give a light feeling and ephemeral atmosphere, which is heavily crushed with thick sound. Single Sails shows the whole spectrum of colours and what band can offer to the listeners. Great groove in Exit The Souls is perfectly balanced with nice keys, and if you want even more, you can also find acoustic ballad The Fall Chorus which could be an americana style evergreen. In just eight songs band includes almost forty five minutes of music, which defines the band concept. As I said before, it’s really hard to find a band with a character and innovative ideas in this genre, but Elephant Tree is different. Habits proves that it is possible, and might be beautiful as well.

Third LP released in Holy Roar Records, convinced me, that the band will be (it already is!) a big part of psych/stoner metal history. Awesome album!

Dopethrone) i szybko usterkę naprawił.

English version:

When I found out that „the heaviest DIY band from Canada” – as Dopethrone members used to say about themselves – will attend to one of London’s clubs as a part of their European tour, I immediately decided to seize that opportunity and to high-five Montreal-based crew. The „Transcanadian Anger” album released in May last year totally impressed me, and it still does, so I could not have any excuses. It is also worth mentioning that during recording of the album Ms. Julie Unfortunate supported Vince in the vocals at the studio, but during the tour she actually took over all the vocal parts. And it was a hit!

Wednesday evening promised to be wonderful under a beautiful cloudless sky. As for the gig location: maximum 150 people, the stage just a few meters from the bar and the intimate atmosphere indicated that it could be one of the louder concerts this year I’ve seen. The crowd was getting thicker, the club was getting hotter and the Gurt band supporting Dopethrone came on stage. I honestly admit that I did not know the support before, although it is one of the most popular UK bands playing sludge / stoner. In fact, from the first chords and riffs, Gurt carried the audience away and put it in the relevant, (paradoxically) humorous mood. A solid dose of music, in general not much different from what the Canadians from Montreal do, was fantastic. It was dirty, hard, sometimes fast, and with the high level of the quality! I was surprised that in such a small club and despite the sound loudness and intensity, everything was selective and clean – although with small technical problems. One of drumkit microphones changed its position, fortunately Shawn Ellingham (Dopethrone drummer) entered the action and quickly repaired the fault. It is also worth mentioning that the evening’s headliners joined the audience and had a fun during performance of the supporting band.

We didn’t have to wait long for Dopethrone, they needed maybe about ten minutes to set up the gear and to finish drinks. When they got on stage, the club was already full and there was really little space. I stood by the side right next to Vince’s amplifiers and it was a mistake. I will explain this at the end of the article. The sound of guitar feedbacks let us know that they are ready, Julie huddled at the drumkit awaiting the right moment to start breaking bones. From the first moments of Snort Dagger from the last album (Transcanadian Anger, 2018), fans went insane, and the band filled the whole place with the wild energy. I have to admit that through the first three tracks, it was not easy for me to get in the mood. Although I love Canadians’ music, the noise and intensity that the band creates live can be painful for listeners. I got used to it and fell into a trance somewhere in the middle of the gig, at the song Dark Foil. I have the impression that the longer the band played, the better it sounded, as if the reception of their music was improving in the head, and the selectivity replaced the noise. With the biggest hit Scum Fuck Blues sung along with the fans, the band went completely crazy, it was a real sludge madness, ended with the stage-diving of one of the fans, as well as the fall of Vince, who continued the slaughter sitting down. Dopethrone finished the work by the song Killdozer and it was a “final touch”, crowned with the destruction of the Shawn’s drumkit.

The concert ended shortly after 10:00PM, I was recovering until the early morning hours. Noise followed me throughout the next day. If you attend to a Dopethrone concert, never position yourself close to the amplifiers, unless you like pain.

I love this band, how they can take away the audience with their dirty, disgusting but really great music. For me, it was the first, but surely not the last gig with Montrealians that will remain in my memories.
